How does it work? 5-ALA is synthesized from the glutamine amino acid in an enzymatic reaction. Stage 1 : Glutamic acid + 5-aminolevulinic acid => Porphobilinogen (PBG) Stage 2 Protoporphyrin IX => Monovinyl protochlorophyllide a-> NADPH, light-> Stage 3 Protochlorophyllide oxidoreductase-> Chlorophyllide A Stage 4 + Phytol tail-> Chlorophyll A.
